First 2021 monsoon storm left thousands without power near Apache Junction

rain-hail

It was the first day of the monsoon and some isolated storms led to power outages for about 3,000 SRP customers in the Apache Junction area. About 1,600 more customers also lost power in the Tempe/Mesa area but it's unclear if that outage was weather-related. Crews are working to fix the outages, and they hope to have all power restored by around midnight.

The biggest outages were reported in two areas around Apache Junction. One location is from Crismon Road to Meridian Drive and Brown Road to Southern Avenue. The second location is Crismon Road to Ironwood Drive and Broadway Avenue to Baseline Road.

In Tempe and Mesa, the neighborhoods impacted were from McClintock Drive to Dobson Road and the Superstition Freeway to Elliot Road. The estimated time to have power restored there is less than an hour. The cause of this outage is not yet known. You can check for updates on the SRP outage map.

The East Valley saw isolated thunderstorms on Tuesday and a severe storm warning was issued for parts of Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. That warning has since expired. Viewers from far east Mesa and San Tan Valley have sent Arizona's Family video of some of the rain. People have also said they've seen lightning in the sky and heard the thunder. However, the rain has been very light and so far, there's hasn't been enough to be picked up on rain gauges.
